If I'd written all the truth I knew for the past ten years, about 600 people - including me - would be rotting in prison cells from Rio to Seattle today. Absolute truth is a very rare and dangerous commodity in the context of professional journalism.

thepumps.jpgGrey hair on stage with an electric guitar.  You just get used to it.  The Pumps, made up of Tom Brill, on guitar, Frank Jundis on drums and,  Buck Barrickman on bass, have plenty of gray hair and receding hairlines.  At one point I saw the base player whip off his dark wrap around shades, only to put on his bifocals to read a playlist.  We are all, sad to say, aging rockers.
Why is it that guys with wireless on their guitars just have to show it off?  It is never just a convenience thing.  They just have to make those strolls though the crowd.

The music from The Pumps sounded good.  They are one of a few bands that travel with a dedicated sound man.  It makes a lot of difference.   From an audience perspective, it is well worth the money.  Bands that have someone paying attention to how they sound, sound better.  (surprise?!)

Musical high points were the old blues song, 40 days.  It was well played and soloed by Brill.  And, the Springsteen song, Pink Cadillac .  Well sung, well played.  It was just a fun rendition.

Other songs?  There was some Tom Petty.  Some Beatles.  Brian Adams, Can't Stop This Thing we Started.  The Tommy Tutone song Jenny (867-5309).  Other than that a good mix of 50's and 60's rockers.  The band was sponsored by Leinenkugles.  I am not a huge fan of that era of music, but it seemed to be well played and people who did know the music seemed enthusiastic and having a good time.   The band also had a showman quality about it behind the happy smile and chatter of bass player Buck Barrickman.  If you are into this genre of music, The Pumps are worth seeing.
