rosswilliamperry1.jpgThe dance floor at the Snout Saloon was filled almost all night, with people boogieing to the  rock/blues sounds of Ross William Perry.  It was a full dance floor and a full bar.  The cash registers were ringing with drink sales.  A good night for the Snout.  It was a big night there.  In addition to the music,  there was a going away party for Snout regular, Staff Sergeant Mike Hanke, who is going back to Iraq for his third deployment there.  Mike is a great guy and we all wish him a safe return a year from now.

Ross William Perry is a Snout regular playing several times a year.  I last reviewed the band in April of 2008, just about a year ago, and at that time the band was not sounding good.  There were troubles that weren't going to be easily fixed, and the band was breaking up.  Fast forward a year and there is a new drummer and bass backing up Ross.  Even more important, there is a woman in Ross' life, and it showed in the music.  Ross is an exceptionally good guitar player, but Ross in love  is exponentially better than that.

Musical high points for the covers was the Jimmi Hendrix, Hey Joe.  Stevie Ray Vaughn's Pride and Joy

rosswilliamperry2.jpgBut there were several other songs I didn't recognize which were played exceptionally well.  I don't know if they were originals or just blues deep cuts.  Ross has a great sense of timing on the guitar.  His blues riffs are clean, clear and perfectly timed.  Of the songs he announced as originals, his song Without You was great!

I tried to get a touch creative when I was taking the pictures.  Generally I rely on ambient light from the can lights point at the stage.  The pictures always turn out a touch bleary though and so last night I turned on the fill flash mode on the camera. I thought maybe I could sharpen the picture up a little bit.  One flash from the camera though, and I had attracted the attention of one of the people dancing.  It was a new song just starting, I took the picture and immediately this woman rushed up to me and said, "Stop that!  Stop taking pictures!  Thish is black magic woman." (it wasn't) but still I felt somewhat chastised and so didn't take any more pictures with the flash until later in the night.

Ross William Perry is a great blues player and worth the price of admission.  And, right now, with the obvious love in his life, he is at the top of his game.  The best I have heard him play.  Ross should be on your "must see" list.
