No man is so foolish but he may sometimes give another good counsel, and no man so wise that he may not easily err if he takes no other counsel than his own. He that is taught only by himself has a fool for a master.
It's sometimes gotta be tough for a long whiskered, wife-beater-wearin', gravelly voiced blues player to fess up about he lives. Especially when that blues guitarist lives, and owns a bar, in Romance Wisconsin. There is just something about the picture that doesn't seem right. Dave Lambert didn't seem to have much trouble though. Saying good bye to the exiting patrons of the Snout Saloon with a cheery "Come visit us in Romance!"
When we first arrived at The Snout Saloon, we immediatly ran into our good friend, Jane the lexicon of local music. Jane seemed a little lukewarm on the band for the night, The Dave Lambert Band. Pronouncing them to be "Jazzy". Disturbing. I hate jazz. Yet, I had liked the sound as I traveled the distance between the front door and Jane's barstool. And, of course there was an element of worry. After my long standing distain of jazz, was I going to have to go back to Joanna Dane (Freak & Geek Chapter President and High Queen) and admit to her a caveat? That I hate jazz all except for this one particular variety?
As it turns out, I think I am safe. I don't know what Jane was smoking, but I would call Dave Lambert's music pure rockin' blues. It had that southern delta blues sound. To Snout regulars the music was similar in style to Howard Ludtke, but most things, Dave played with a touch faster beat. Dave played some great slide guitar. Slide guitar that would have totally wowed any audience but a Howard crowd. Still though, extremely good. What I liked in particular to Dave's style was it's dirtier, muddier, raunchier sound compared to Howard. For his slide work, he played what looked to a genuine Dobro. It was at any rate a resonator guitar which had been modified with a humbucking electrical guitar pickup at the neck. It had quite an interesting sound. Not at all like a traditional acoustic guitar, much harsher. Yet the resonation wasn't really there either because of the amplification pickups, so it didn't particularly sound like a traditional resonator either.
Dave doesn't travel light. I believe I counted five guitars in his musical arsenal. Thought he spent most of his time using a Fender Stratocaster. He had two resonators, playing both of them at different times in the evening. At one point, when asked for any requests, I asked him to "If he had anything to blow the dust off of his Flying V". To which he complied with style and some serious rock and roll. Vocally, Dave doesn't excel, his real strong point is his guitar. But, his voice works for much of his play list. He picks his songs well, and with the exception of a few token covers where he struggled a bit with pitch and key, he sounded really good.
Musical highpoints, the Jimmy Thackery song I'm gonna sell the bitches car ...and buy myself a cool guitar Dave did an excellent rendition on his Strat, with a great long solo. An extended version of The Jimi Hendrix Experience song, Hey Joe. Complete with all of it's theatrics. And really, though it could be interpreted that I half panned it two paragraphs ago, any of Dave's slide work. I really enjoy slide guitar blues and Dave did a really great job of it. Harsh, rockin' and bluesy. Very, very good.
Also, I have to thank Dave for one thing in particular. I have always heard about guitar players who grab a beer bottle and play slide guitar with it. But, I have never seen it in person. That all changed on Saturday night. Dave plays an excellent beer bottle slide.

As a side note, we were also "treated" (sarcasm implied) to meeting Chippewa Falls flamingly gay man. It's a small town, you understand. We only have one. Even at that, given flamers per capita, we are probably still over the national average. A short, late 30s, open necked shirt, white pants, flamer with a bleach blonde mohawk. ...Drunk, of course. His idea of dancing seemed to be doing a baseball slide into the splits. Would you want your white pants ...ahem, those of you who own them, that is... sliding across the floor of the Snout Saloon? Something about me, makes me a drunkard's magnet, and so of course he had to single me out for a chat!
So, Dave Lambert, I would classify as highly recommended. Worth the trip, we look forward to seeing him again. You can visit Dave's web site at: http://www.davelambertband.com and his music is available through iTunes, with the record, Live at Piggy Blues, recorded in Austin, MN close to where I grew up.
we would love to see you folks on June 27th for a Pink Floyd tribute along with an Allman Brothers tribute. If that isn't enough I will be hooking up with Cheech for a great guitar jam somewhere in the lineup!
You don't want to miss this!! Yes. All at Romance Tavern in Romance Wisconsin!
