It was a long day for us. We had company come and visit for the day, we cooked meals and had a great time. I was fairly tired by the time I got to the Snout Saloon for tonight's music. But, I had been looking forward to seeing a new band. Where the Snout lineup so far has been the list of old favorites, this was someone I had never seen before. The band Little Willie was enthusiastic and did a good job. Technically I thought their performance was there. I would call their music jazz influence blues. Little Willie is a fairly high energy act and deserves you give it a listen. Let me first off say, I am not turning out reviews by boiler plate. The band name is Little Willie. They have a very cool promo poster. I can't find a web site for them, or even a myspace page. So, I am going to have to say things like Bass Player, and Female Lead singer. I don't have any real names. It is a shame. In some ways I am going to write a negative report on Little Willie, but, I also have to say, to a certain degree, it is going to be that jazz sound that will taint what I write below. I am not a fan of jazz, or whatever I happen to suspect is jazz related. There are lots and lots of jazz fans out there. I wasn't a huge Little Willie fan, but you might be. Because the performance was good. It was fun. The lead guitar was animated. The Bass player was even quite animated …uh, yeah, well for a bass player anyway… :) The male lead vocal was strong and had a good voice. The female lead singer sounds the best when she is singing raunchy, gravelly, bawdy sounding songs. But, I don't think she has the voice to be able to do more than short segments in this style. Understandable. No woman her age should have the bourbon and smoked away kind of voice you would need to sing a whole song, let alone a whole night like this. I think she could have given us just a bit more energy. But, at times the spark was there; so it is in her, it might have just been an off night. Musical high point, I think the song was credited as Rockin' with the Kid by J.C. Royals, but I could be wrong about that. It was a good tune. It played well into the band's strong points. I was not a fan of most of the bands well known covers. I know they have to play them for the back row fans. I am not saying they massacred the classics or anything. They do a Little Willie version of the song and it appeases the bar. If you are a band fan, it will be a good time for a smoke break after next July. All in all, Little Willie was worth a night out. You won't be disappointed. They are not a band you will go home an rave about. But, is only a small segment of us who consider "the other people" the background noise of a bar. If you want to hang out with your best buds, have a good time and have some live music to look at once in a while, you will have a great night. When a season goes by at a small town bar, where you are used to seeing the same faces, and suddenly a face is gone. What happened to that person? Have they just not checked in? When you spend a music season not just at a bar, but sitting next to the same guy at the same corner of a pool table, you just get to know them a little bit. Last year there was a guy in Harley leathers with an iPhone. Every week he spent the whole event either texting, typing or surfing on his iPhone while the band played on. He never really talked much to anyone between sets. He always scowled at me if I beat him to the bar and grabbed his spot on the corner. …Not that it happened that often. You all know my wife… We generally arrive late. So where is that guy this year? Is he ok? Is this what gives us small town folk the moniker of nosey? If you have been to the Snout before, please hurry back, your family is worried about you. Hits: 428 Comments (5)Subscribe to this comment's feedLast year
Last year the Snout had Howard Luedtke dressed as a hippy. Not that it was a huge stretch.
THIS WRITER IS A JOKE
Someone needs to go to journalism school. This guy is a joke. I don't forsee anyone with any reasonalbly good sense that would respect what this guy is writing about music and what it's all about. Who's website is this? He doesn't even have the balls to put his name out there. Dumbass.
Reply from the jokester, Thats Mr. Dumbass to you.
Holy long sentence! I have to agree on one thing, schooling is needed somewhere. Check up there underneath the title. It is called a "by line". Though not all the authors here at the freaks and geeks site have had cojones, its has been more of a gender thing than a reflection on their bravery. ...speaking of bravery, is your real name doesn't?
I don't really claim to know anything about music, I just have my opinions. I know what I like and what I don't. I know what I think is good vs exceptional. You don't have to like all the same music I do. No one should. Take what you want from my reviews, or nothing at all! . ...
I just happened upon this site and am glad to see it, although this review is completely whacked. For more info on Little Willie check out http://www.myspace.com/littlewillieband or come down to the Snout on Feb 13th.
