I wouldn't recommend sex, drugs or insanity for everyone, but they've always worked for me. ~Hunter S. Thompson

Saturday night was Dave Rogers from Lacrosse, on stage at the Snout Saloon. I am not a huge Dave Rogers fan. His performance is a touch dry, but technically perfect. So, behind that caveat, I have to say Dave was sounding the best I have heard him. The band plays a mix of mostly blues covers with an original or two thrown in. Dave plays a pretty good blues shuffle, so we hear some good Stevie Ray Vaughn. And, Dave Orr, in addition to being band Drummer, is the sound tech. No surprise the sound is great. I chose Dave Rogers over another possible choice for the evening, South Farwell warming up for Down Lo at the House of Rock in Eau Claire. The Wife has been looking forward to seeing them again for a while so she called some her posse for a trip there. South Farwell is on the regular play list here. Their CD is often in the player. I could have easily tagged along to the House of Rock, but I am planning on seeing South Farwell next month in the Volume One Backstage Series. I figured it like this. Sure, the House of Rock show would be more exciting with a livelier crowd, but I anticipate the sound at the Volume One show will be perfect. I wanna hear that sound, hungry for South Farwell.

At one point between songs I was starting to dig around for my coat. During the previous song I had been thinking I should maybe shoot my video clip. But, then Dave announced the upcoming Carlos Santana song, I forget what it was. "Hummm," I thought, "can he do it justice?" "Nahhhh. I'll hold out." I have to say, Dave, I owe you an apology. It was fantastic! For me, easily the high point of the evening. I have to be honest, much of what kept me at the Snout were rumors of Howard Ludtke lurking around the area at another gig. Perhaps showing up to play-in on a set with Dave. I have never heard the two friends play together, but I can well imagine it. Dave's perfection at playing, mixed with Howard's heart. Rumor alone, easily, kept me there. But, Howard must have called it an early night. I suppose you have all heard that Howard's wife and bass player, Magic Deb has been sick. We are all thinking' about you Deb. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.
Tight quarters at the Tomahawk Bar in Chippewa, Royce and Neria play to the crowd.
It was a night of a lot of live music in town. Someone was playing at the Dam Bar. If I would have had transportation, I might have tried to get over there quick just to check it out. Before I went to the Snout I hit the Tomahawk Bar on Bridge Street in Chippewa Falls where a couple of musicians were playing A guy who's name is Neria, or something like that, and Royce. I know Royce as the sous-chef at Native Bay. It was a good show for a couple of fresh faces. Lots of stops and starts. A fun range of songs, but sometimes songs fell apart because of forgotten lyrics too. I was quite happy when focus was pulled on a Fleetwood Mac song that Neria started out with. It wasn't really working out, so he stopped but then did rethought it, pulled it together and did an outstanding job. I would like to see these guys play again. Maybe the Tomahawk needs a steady bar band?

So about mid way through the second set, a guy with red hair a red beard and artsy glasses walks up to me. He leans in and says, "Are you that Freaks and Geeks guy?". Oh dear. My first public outing. I had to confess I was.
