No man is so foolish but he may sometimes give another good counsel, and no man so wise that he may not easily err if he takes no other counsel than his own. He that is taught only by himself has a fool for a master. ~Hunter S. Thompson

This was the 31st year of Decadent Cabaret, but my first time to attend. The show bills itself as "A tradition of fishnet stockings and notoriously memorable musical performances", to which I would agree on both counts. It is close to musical overload, eleven bands in one long night. And, there were two other nights I didn't attend. It was a variety of music, starting more mellow early in the evening and spanning to blasting, roaring heavy metal by the end. What made it personally very cool for me, was not only my first experience at the Decadent Cabaret, but also, with the exception of Excellent Adventure, it was all new bands to me.
We arrived a touch late. The Wife had misplaced THE fishnet stockings. You know the ones. They were the fishnet stockings that tied the whole outfit together. Not THOSE fishnet stockings, or even THE OTHER fishnet stockings. She had to have THE fishnet stockings, which were finally found about the time we should have been standing in the audience. They had fallen in behind the dresser drawer. We walked in just at the end of Excellent Adventure.

The real changing of the guard came when No Loving Place came on the stage. The grey hair filed out as the first of the real hard rock began to blast. I really liked No Loving Place, and they were easily the most theatrical of all the bands. Lead singer Tony Stamm elevated the set into the realm of performance art. Tell me this guy isn't/wasn't a theater major at some college somewhere. They were very enjoyable. Looking at their MySpace page it appears they only play a couple of times a year. I really would like to see a full night of them.

Since I hadn't seen Duncan Ninja before, I didn't really know what to expect. I did see Adrian Klenz, and Jeff Walk playing at the Volume One Backstage Series as the Klenz Walk Sextet. A jazz band that, given my predisposition against jazz, I really wasn't too crazy about. I was expecting much of the same. …I was totally wrong. What we got was a wild-ass Beastie Boys set. Starting with Fight For Your Right, and a crescendo of Sabotage. It was fantastic! Duncan Ninja will be appearing on March 18th during the Volume One Backstage Series at the State Theater in Eau Claire with Irie Sol.

Even though this is really just a musical sampler, it is hard to see a show like this without turning it into a battle of the bands in your own mind. You end up picking a "winner". But, in this lineup, it was tough. My tops had to be Duncan Ninja with it's Beastie Boys set. I liked No Loving Place for it's originals, but for the sheer surprise factor, my absolute favorite was Meridene playing Meat Loaf.
Decadent Cabaret will be on my calendar for next year.
The Decadent Cabaret also had no shortage of beautiful women, some in pleather and fishnets, some not.
Meridene is available on iTunes and their MySpace page is at http://www.myspace.com/meridene The band Duncan Ninja has both a MySpace page at http://www.myspace.com/duncanninja and Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Duncan-Ninja/93600413394
