Aquamarine Dream Machine on stage at the Snout Saloon, March 2010

I have somewhat held off on writing this week. Saturday night I was at the Snout Saloon for a three band night. Three bands from Des Moines, Iowa made the six hour drive up here to play at the Snout Saloon. It was interesting. It was good, it wasn't fantastic. All three bands had their strong points, but they had some weak points too. The Snout was filled and busy from open to close. It was a great crowd. A much younger crowd than the Snout usually sees.

The main trouble with all three bands really, was vocals. Particularly the band Autocrat. Pounding good band. The video I captured doesn't do them justice, instrumentally they were pretty great. Fairly hard rock. I liked them But, ah man, vocals were not so good. If they could either pull things together and pound out some stronger vocals on the lyrics, or pull in another member as a singer without messing up the dynamic they have right now, they could be really great.

A similar but not so severe problem with the second band, Mood Beside. They were a little stronger vocally than they were instrumentally though, so what was gained was also lost. The singer had a sweet spot in his vocals though, and there were a couple of his songs where it was perfectly in his range and I thought they were pretty good.

The third band Aquamarine Dream Machine had some great tunes. All originals. Bluesy, and a little softer, it struck a great mood with the whole crowd. The dance floor was usually pretty busy. The guitar solos were really great. Very, very blues based Rock solos. Very well done. I liked them.

I'm telling' you what though, the Snout was seriously smokey. With virtually 100% of the patrons, other than me, smoking. In addition the band was running smoke machines so their light show would show up better. I inhaled my yearly intake of PM2.5 all in one evening. Though not usually prone, even my eyes were burning by 1am. We blew outta there and into the fresh air before Aquamarie finished their set.

What the bands lacked in some areas were more than made up for in others. You can't tell me that somebody in the band doesn't work in a print shop. Free bumper stickers. Show reminder cards. Free custom CDs with the show date printed on the inner sheet and all sealed up in transparent wrap. Very cool. But, it has sat right under my chin all week, I haven't stuck it in and listened to it yet.

What I heard that was interesting, the bands, all nine members, were being put-up for the night at the parents house of Assembly Required lead guitar player, Brady Hasmuk. I say outstanding! For number one, wouldn't that have been a cool after-party? But also, I realize I bashed on these three bands a little bit. But, I did have a great time. And, I thank Brady's parents for hosting these guys. I am sure it was this act that made the whole thing possible. I hope they didn't eat the Hasmuks out of house and home the next morning. I think its great when parents are this involved. When Assembly Required played the Snout, Brady's mom was sitting right beside me. Very cool to have that support.

Music of the night here at my house? Skee-Lo, I Wish, thinking back about Duncan Ninja on the State Theater stage. Some Meridene. …and of course some Gaga. Heading out now to catch Quadrant 4 at the Red Parrot.

Assembly Required Sound Guy

I have been waiting patiently waiting for this review. The anticipation of these great musicians coming here was killing me. Finally they arrived at our gig Friday night at The View on Lake Wissota. Which was awesome they got to see us play some good cover tunes. Then Saturday after noon came, leaving Timbuktu with two vans. One full of PA equipment the other filled with musicians and hauling a trailer full of more equipment.

Got to The Snout did set up nice and early everything was working in order. Went back to Timbuktu Uncle Mike (who is playing harmonica in the picture above) grilled up some great eats before the show, raced back to the show and it was on for the next 5 hours The Snout was all theirs.

John you where right the after party was awesome Chris Way cousin to Richard Way joined us with his banjo and Uncle Mike and I played some harmonica while everybody else joined in on some guitars, bass and drums. We partied till 7 am when the sun started to say hello. I blessed my smoked burnt eyes with some much needed eye lid inspection.

The weekend was a success and Sunday was sad as they all left back to Iowa. Hopefully we can get some more gigs for these guys up here in the future. Thank You Snout for letting these talented musicians do there stuff up here! Thank you to everybody that came out you made our night!!!!

Thanks for the Video
Thank you for taking the time to come out to our show. You would think with the free stuff, there was a generous backer in this operation,...but actually, None of us work at a print shop. No free ride here man! Paid for by yours truly and 7 other musicians. We're just a few professional bands from Des Moines, IA who know how to make things happen. We are exceptionally thankful to Brady and his family for all their great support. We are all very capable, hard-working musicians that would have done the gig even without housing though. The support was exceptional great. The Hasmuk family and friends are very, very wonderful people that saved us a lot of money and brought joy and delight on this part of the tour. We made sure to only drink half their beer, and eat half their food haha (we packed a lot of delicious items).

We're looking to play The Snout again, as well as The View and The House of Rock. Maybe you can check us out on Round 2 of the Chippewa/Eau Claire area. By then, all 3 bands might have full lengths to sell at the show, and Autocrat will have a vocalist full time so Jordan can focus back on guitar and backing vocals.

It sounds like you must have some amazing bands around Chippewa to think we might not have it together. I'd appreciate some links to these bands from Chippewa that have raised the bar on your expectations. Maybe then we can see eye to eye. It totally makes sense that you thought Aquamarine Dream Machine was the best. They have their stuff together the best, but it is essentially the style of music I think you're most used to.

Till then -

Cheers

Were you even there!
All I have to say is I believe you missed a couple key Rockin facts. For one ,all three Bands Played All ORIGINALS NO COVERS sorry if anyone missed that and all three bands were separate genres of music. Also these guys traveled 7 hours to rock in Our town. I personally have seen hundreds of shows at the snout being a past resident upstairs and this one had the sickest light shoe yet. Next to Assembly Required's light show well done. I saved the best ROCKIN FACT FOR LAST. Not mentioned once in this entire article Richard Way. Played in all three bands. Percussion in AutoCrat and AquaMarine Dream machine. & Lead guitar and vocals in MoodBeside. Des Moines Rocks
