This is going to be a rare article. I don't think that I can come up with a single thing to complain about in this whole night of music. I know all of you who follow me are amazed. The music was outstanding! The show ran about half an hour long, so there was even more to enjoy. The crowd was great. The bar was packed all night. We had a good friend hanging out with us, it was just a really great time. Super Deece is a cover band. There were maybe two originals for the night, that I heard announced. There were a couple of other songs that I didn't recognize but they could have been obscure covers. Of the two originals, I thought the first one was really pretty good. I found myself wishing I would have taped it. So when I heard about a second original in the third set, I scrambled for the camera. I wish I wouldn't have. The dance floor was packed. With all the people, the video was hard to get good shots. I had to spend too much time dicking around with moving to different spots. It removed the fun factor, I couldn't enjoy the song myself. And, I'm not sure the taping caught the spirit of it all anyway. Too long for most of my ADD web visitors. I might post it, I might not.
Greg "Cheech" Hall plays lead guitar for the band Super Deece
Musical highpoints, a song by Big Head Todd and the Monsters, Broken Hearted Savior. Fantastic! Solos were amazing! Cheech has great timing, and in this song, I felt like the timing was flawless. The notes flowed together. Never any surprises, the melody was always exactly where you expected it to go. It was great! Also in the right up there category, the Traffic song, Hey Mr. Fantasy, which I had heard Cheech play last year when he was at the Snout with the Smokin Bandits. It was my number one song of that night. Then also there was the Jimmy Thackery song Sell the Bitches Car (and buy myself a cool guitar). A great, great song. And, its a song I have only ever heard one other cover band do. …I'll get back to that later. The bar was packed all night. Lisa, the bartender for the night was working hard. Chad, the stage manager, was walking around smiling. I think he told me three times over the course of the night, his slur getting worse each time, that "…it don't get no better than this" I really feel like he is right. I think Super Deece might have been the best band I have ever seen at the Snout.
What is this guy's name? If you know, post it as a comment below.
As an interesting followup to this whole review, …and I don't want to get into a whole "in a bar two days in a row thing" but, ah, I was back in the bar Sunday… and was sipping my Red Stripe next to an older guy. He was still talking about how much he liked the band the night before. And really from the mouths of babes, and drunks on the bar stool next to me, he summed up my thoughts perfectly. He said, "It wasn't so much that they played the music well. Which they did. It was the fact that they played really good songs. Songs you don't hear. It was songs you knew, and loved, but they were different songs than cover bands always play. " He said, "Do you know how many god damned times I have heard Mustang Sally?" And there it is really. Well said. So its not even so much the guitar playing that is stellar, but the song selection. Thats what really makes this band what it is. The whole reason we were in the bar on Sunday was because The Wife had asked Chad to save her the Autocrat/Mood Beside/Aquamarine show poster from last week. Saturday night when we got there, he pointed it out, put it on top of the fridge to hold it for us. At several points I said to myself, "Don't forget the poster" but of course I did. Naturally someone had nicked it by the time we got there today. Bastard!
The night of the show, I got recognized by Andy Hayho, guitar player for Assembly Required. He came up and asked me if I was "the music critic" I replied to the affirmative, somewhat nervously. In my mind, sort of scrolling back through prior works. He told me that he agreed with me on about 90% of what I write. I figured by presidential standards, that's not bad. At any rate, Andy, well met.
Larry and His Flask doesn't travel light. A busy dance floor, what can go wrong?
But, while we standing at the Mousetrap, just behind us, we heard an exchange that turned into the amusing line of the night. Loud voice, "Damn, you're looking stylish!", Something was mumbled in reply, and then, "You look like… …bad ass Dracula!" We had to turn. Sallow skin, slicked back hair, well dressed in black. Though personally, I thought I saw a little Eddie Munster mixed in. Yeah, that pretty well covered it. It was a great night!
