No man is so foolish but he may sometimes give another good counsel, and no man so wise that he may not easily err if he takes no other counsel than his own. He that is taught only by himself has a fool for a master. ~Hunter S. Thompson

I haven't been writing much. I haven't been working much. I haven't been painting my house, because it is raining all the time. I haven't been riding the Harley at all. Man, I don't have any idea what has happened in the last four weeks. The days have just flown together in one big long rainy haze. I did get out to see, what eventually became billed Deb Fest on a Sunday afternoon a couple of weeks ago. It was great to have it on an off day and there were so many musicians in the audience. Those people provide us with so very much great live music but they get to see very little of it. We split the day, coming out in the afternoon and catching the tail end of Howard playing in a set, then Little Willie. Later in the day we arrived back, just in time to see the last couple of songs from Sassy Magoo --wishing I would have caught the whole show. They were great. I need to get down to the Red Dragon and catch them some night. Wrapping up the night was Fully Loadid, who I hadn't seen in three or four years. Those guys I was a little disappointed in. But, I can give them an out, and maybe explain why, down below. One other bit of news that came up during the day. Michael Hanke is going to be running a benefit triathlon for Deb, sometime here in July. Check in with the Snout Saloon to find out about more details. As far as Deb Fest, here is how I judge it. When people walked in the door, they bought tickets. They threw those tickets into some door prize buckets. Top prize was a sweet looking guitar, donated by Dave's Guitar Shop down in Lacrosse but there were quite a number of other good prizes. I think the final word could be from the fans, I'll tell you how they said it. They didn't draw for the door prizes until the night was over. Must be present to win. I have been to stuff like this before. It takes forever to give out the door prizes because only one in ten tickets are still there. Not so on this day. There were maybe four redraws, everyone was still there. Yeah, sure it would have been cool to walk outta there with that guitar under your arm, but it wouldn't have been enough to keep people there had not the music been outstanding. A few days later I saw Laarks at the Volume One Summer Concert Series. Guys, where is the new material that kicks like the old stuff? Granted, Phoenix Park is maybe not the venue to really cut loose. I do hope it exists. As it was, I was disappointed. They had a couple of new songs, but lame. Acoustic Cafe hosted the East Hill Grass band and I was there. They did a good show. It was much slower paced than Evergreen Grass which was the last bluegrass band I had seen. It was mellow and easy. Technically, I think it was a good show, I think though I really miss the excitement of other bands. A few days before Deb Fest I had seen Alter Ego at Dewey's Roadhouse in Chippewa Falls. Great heavy metal band. They played mostly covers. Manson, Slipknot, Korn. It was some really great music. The voice of lead singer was perfect for the music, though he wasn't totally on the right note all the time. The depth of his voice made me feel like I was there for the real thing on any song with a bit of a roar in it. The Wife loved the Godsmak. Limp Bizkit's _Break Stuff_, Drowning Pool _Bodies_ What I was a little put off by is a Maverick Media radio station, 92.9, showing up at a metal event. These are the guys who pulled out of the local metal scene when they folded up The Carp radio station. I think they were very brave (but very stupid -- no surprise) to show up someplace where there are a bunch of metal heads. And finally, just recently, I caught Left Wing Bourbon at T & C Roundabout. Great show. Faith Ulwelling has the most amazing voice. I think, the most amazing voice of any female vocalist I have ever met.
Derek Sharp lead singer for The Guess Who at the Northern Wisconsin State Fair July 2010
The thing I found was amazing was lead singer, Derek Sharp, though he must have played in hundreds of shows at this point still seemed to be having a really good time. He has been with the band since 2008. OK, no huge surprise one of my favorite movie genres are music themed. This time I point you to the movie Rock Star, with Markie Mark. There were several times while watching The Guess Who where I was saying "This is like the movie Rock Star played out live!" It was crazy the similarity in vocal styles of Derek Sharp to Izzy, Mark Wahlberg's character.
