Brian Bethke on stage at the Mousetrap Mar11

A full night of music featuring No Loving Place at the Volume One Backstage concert series, Brian Bethke and his new band down at the Mousetrap and then back to Chippewa Falls for Bound2Break at Every Buddy's Bar and Grill. Of course it didn't exactly go off like clockwork, but the music we saw was great and it was fun being out on the town.

So this night, I have to confess, the reason we were late was my fault. Events conspired against me. We got to see the last three songs of No Loving Place. What they played I liked quite a bit. This band is quite variable in their acoustic shows. Plus, they also go by Sons of Banner when they shuffle the members around a bit. The video I caught I have listened to quite a few times since the show.

I really love the theatrical element lead singer Tony Stamm puts into the show. It is stuff like that reminds me why I am at a live music show and not just sitting in my living room. Its called a show for a reason, it is great to have a showman up there on stage.

The Brian Bethke show at the Mousetrap was a good deal more thrown together than I expected. I was hoping for a repeat of Brian's new band, Lid Cap, at the Decadent Cabaret. And, if I could have gotten my act together a little earlier and shown up at the Volume One Backstage show. As it was, at the Mousetrap, it provided some good times, intermixed between confessions of "Ah, we never have really played this song together before, but…" It didn't show too bad or too often.

Coming up after Brian was John Nietz's new band. Nietz was former guitarist for The Excellent Adventure. I couldn't risk it though, because the next venue called too strongly.

Bound2break, at Every Buddys. Loved it! Fantastic band. Here is the deal without them though. They sing "come together songs". They don't ever start perfect. What happens is they start playing a song, and it starts pretty rough. Then somehow or another, they come together as a band and it starts to work. By the end of the song, you are loving it. I like that.

A second clip from the Mousetrap as Brian sings one of his new originals.  I like!

Granted, its tough for me, sitting there holding my video camera, wanting to catch the "perfect" representation of their music. So I am sitting there with my video camera. Listening to the beginning of the song, thinking "I should have shot the last song" and then by the time the end of the song comes, I am thinking "I should have shot *this* one." Call it a lack of faith, but keep in mind this is only the second time I have seen them. …Er, should I say "heard them" because this was at Every Buddys and with no stage lights, you never "See" a band there.  As it turned out, they announced the final song of the night and I hadn't shot anything yet.  So, I grabbed what I grabbed.  Which, really I wish I would have gotten one of the earlier ones.  I just hope these guys get booked into a venue with some lights!  At least maybe then I won't cut off their heads in the video because I can't see them in the viewfinder.

All and all it was a great end to a great night!

The Mouse trap gig was a thrown together just for fun drunken Jam of friends with no practice and heavily influenced by the beers we drank while watching NLP. The New polished Brian Bethke Band can be seen here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AWgRXOn8_QM

First I just want to say I think everyone had a lot of fun at the `Trap, but the show was definitely geared toward the venue and the multitude of good friends there. And for that part I think we achieved our (minimalistic) goals there pretty well.
John's new band is called "The Revolvers" and Adrian Klenz helped out on vocals quite a bit. You really missed a spectacular thing there, especially when Brian sat in much later with the Adrian Klenz and the Revolvers on a very classic Bob Dylan tune, as well as always fantastic solos by phenom guitarist John Neitz(Downer's Grove, The Excellent Adventure) and multi-woodwind mastermind Brian Handeland(Eau Claire Jazz Ensemble I, Duncan Ninja, Brian Bethke Band). We'll be playing (probably early) at the House of Rock "War On Drugs" radio benefit on April 20th. Thanks for listening!
