No man is so foolish but he may sometimes give another good counsel, and no man so wise that he may not easily err if he takes no other counsel than his own. He that is taught only by himself has a fool for a master.

Last Open Road Every Buddys March 2011

Central Street in Chippewa Falls is beginning to have an actual "music scene".   On Saturday night both The Snout Saloon and the new venue on Central, Every Buddy's Bar and Grill were both hosting music.  Blues rock at the Snout, and Hip Hop at Every Buddys enough diversity there to keep most folks happy, I would guess.

I really feel like I have to lay the night out in the order it happened.  Because I have slightly mixed feelings about the band Last Open Road.  But don't worry it works out ok for them in the end.  I have been trying a little harder to get The Wife out of the house a little earlier, so we don't arrive right at set break.   This night I was successful!  Rounding up our friend, The Blonde, we actually arrived at the bar not very long into the first set.  The music was well played, don't get me wrong.  But it didn't really do much for me.  It was the music of the late seventies and I already lived that life once.  It reminded me of the Bowling Alley in LeRoy Minnesota.  The most happening spot, if that tells you anything, of my youth.  Never a good reference.   So, it was a matter of their musical selection, not their performance thereof that I complain about.

It was funny because just last week I was grousing to The Wife about the small crowd at the Sheeley House.  I was saying, "Where are all these non-smokers that told us they would be out!  …If only the state would make bars no smoking?"  I was thinking of one couple in particular who we haven't seen in the bars in what seems like forever.  Then, suddenly half way into the set here they were at the Snout.  They had been at a wedding dance where the music had been of the "gag me" variety.   She had remembered the listing for blues this weekend.  It was great to see them out on the town.  It made the night!

Set break came up, and polling The Blonde who agreed, our trio decided to jump next door where Every Buddy's was staging some hip-hop.  I was in particular looking forward to seeing the rapper Fantom who I had seen once before at Every Buddy's.   Unfortunately, I don't know my rappers as good as I should.  It was not Fantom, but FATHOM who was on stage.  And it seemed he was having a bit of an off night.  Some of his stuff was really great but then it sort of fell apart.  I guess he had maybe never worked with the DJ before.   There were some bobbles and some rough patches and some a cappella that didn't really work out.  I still wasn't unhappy though, because I really liked it when it was working.

The headliners Frozen Tundra, were great entertainment.  I have seen them three times now but I don't think I have written much about them.  Great show.   The female lead singer is fantastic.  She has great clarity and timing.  And at times leads a real soulful touch to the band.  If you watch the video clip taken from stage right.  (..Ahem, which is really a joke, because this is Every Buddys and it is a very dark place to watch music.  I thought about just posting the audio!)  Watch it to the very end and she adds this beautiful hum to the background.  It was beautiful, poignant, perfect.

When Frozen Tundra's set ended we were ready for the home base feel of the Snout and so were we walked the 50ft of sidewalk between the bars.   As we walked back into the door of the Snout the band was playing the final notes of the second set.   Our luck back to haunt us.  I had somewhat mixed feelings about returning, having been a bit underwhelmed the first set.

She of the post-wedding-dance excitedly filled us in on what we missed.   It seemed Last Open Road had bloomed during the second set.  I was dubious, but we were sticking it out anyway.  Third set proved she had not lied.  I thought Last Open Road played a great third set.  This was the music that I caught off the band's web site several months back, when I first wanted to see them.  It made me happy now that I finally had.  The band plays some great Stevie Ray Vaughn.  Some great eighties tunes.  All three of the strings players do vocals, and so there is great potential for diversity.  Both Stevie Rindt and Nick Foytik, on guitars have lots of talent.

Frozen Tundra at Every Buddy's and some soulful sounds.

Last Open Road at the Snout Saloon sings the Willie Dixon song, I just want to make love to you.
Last Open Road sings a little Stevie Ray Vaughn, Pride and Joy.

All in all the evening was great.  It was really cool having the two bars with such diverse music on the same night.  I really hope that sort of thing happens more often.  And, I do offer my apologies to the non-smokers on whom I cast aspersions last week.  The live music is great in this little town and I hope to see more of you out!
