It was sort of an odd evening. Folk music early, and metal late. In a way, this is going to be a tough review to write. I really don't have too much in the way of complaints. I have to thank Every Buddy's Bar and Grill for staging the best heavy metal show I have seen in this town. Three very good bands. Made by Failure with guests, Senza and Silenize. All three, hard rocking metal bands. Made By Failure is a new band this year and I have only heard them once before. The first time I saw them, they were warming up for a couple of other metal bands. I was in the bar alone and was really happy with the show. So happy in fact, I called The Wife, telling her she should really come down and join me. She isn't one to just dash out of the house though and so she missed their set. As it turned out, I declared them the best act of that night.
I have to say I was just as impressed at this show. The band rocks. They get their lyrics out clearly. They have a great beat. I was very happy with the whole show. That said, it was not a flawless night. Third song into Made By Failure's set, there was a strong smell of burning insulation and then a protracted break while Wes, the bar-owner/sound-man and the band worked through the difficulties. I moved to a clear lane in visual sight of the fire exit signs. After a bit the music started up again, I could be mistaken but I don't think the sound was quite as good after that point.
Warming up for Made By Failure, it was the first time for me to see the band Senza. First time for this band, though I have seen all of its members in other bands. Most notably, Eric Giardina and Rick St. Germaine from No Loving Place. I would say of the night, I liked them the least of the three bands. But when you have three bands this good, it is really just splitting hairs. I felt their music is oddly timed. Lots of rhythm changes and stray beats --like an element of discord. I have no doubt it is intended to sound this way. We are not talking a quality issue here, we are talking style. And, I wasn't really down with it. It made me feel like a fool with white man's disease, when I would head bang and seem to be out of time every few beats. But, that is just one guy's opinion, the crowd certainly enjoyed them.
I have seen the band Silenize several times, liking them more each time. The Volume One local "best of the Chippewa Valley" poll is going on and I can't remember for sure if I put them or Bound 2 Break down as best new band. It was one of the two though. Sadly, we got to the show late for the standard reason and so we only caught the last two songs. Great music, great vocals, I think they are an outstanding band.
The crowd was fairly constant through the night. Sadly there was one drunken, unpredictable asshole, trying to mosh with a bunch of people who didn't really want to mosh. That somewhat distracted most of the enjoyment of the final set.
