Poos on the Pond was hosting its birthday party today. And, by an odd set of circumstances I happened to find myself sitting in the front row to see the band thrown together and dubbed Thick Mojo. I wasn't there long, maybe ten songs at the most. There were a few little issues as would be expected for a group of guys who have seldom played together before. All in all, the band threw together quite well, I would say. Had not a long laundry list of chores been calling I could have happily whiled away an evening.
But it was kind of a confused afternoon that led me to Poo's. In kind of a worrisome way too. You see a few weeks ago there was a grand plan. I had it all figured out. The Wife and I would fire up the Harleys and head out from Chippewa Falls about noon. We would ride hard, about three hours, up into Minnesota where we would land at a campground with a bunch of other bikers. Then, the next morning, head out on a 120 mile ride as a group. Hit some stops along the way and see some good countryside, nice roads. Well, the first part worked out great. It wasn't until we got to the campground and there were no other bikes that things began to sour. We were a week early.
Granted, thats better than a week late. Because the following weekend we made the same trek and had a great time and a great ride. But still, showing up someplace a week early is a alzheimers sized smack in the face. I have been a little gun-shy, double and triple checking my dates ever since. So today, when I rolled into River Bend Winery, and it seemed quiet, too quiet, I was even unhappier than usual to find out Leiah Webb was going to be playing the next day.
Now later I was vindicated to see River Bend Vineyard listed it wrong in Facebook. I was happy to note, in fact I am not going crazy. But in the meantime, I had a backup plan. Thick Mojo playing at Poo's on the Pond. A short hop on Hwy 53 and we were there.
The band was considered somewhat thrown together because originally there were some thoughts of doing a Sparky and the Wipers reunion concert. But then that didn't seem to be able to work out schedule-wise for everyone. So, Thick Mojo was thrown together, made up of Mike Schlenker and Tony Basley of the band Thick Shoe. And, guitar player Josh Entzminger along of bass player Terry "Mojo" Demars both of the band Mojo Lemon.
I only heard first set music. The band hadn't really kicked in gear yet. So it was good music. Not great. I am sure if I could have stayed longer that would have turned around. Lots of talent and experience up there on stage and I bet once they were warmed up it would have been a great show. Even as it was I was quite happy. I suggest keeping track of this event. Free keg beer, free burgers, great music. This is somewhere I need to remember to be next year.
