I wouldn't recommend sex, drugs or insanity for everyone, but they've always worked for me.

Qwikfire on stage at the Snout Saloon September 2011
It was about a half capacity crowd when I arrived at the Snout Saloon.  A fantastic ZZ Top cover was blasting and the crowd was dancing.  It was good to be out on this the second weekend of the music season starting back up.  Even nicer was the weather.  Different than last year, when it was already fridged by the time the season started.  This year the walk down to the bar was quite pleasent.  So far, it has been a great year!

I'm sorry but I was ready to dislike Qwikfire.  I really was.  Kind of a cheesy name, no web site.  The band logo was a total flashback to the 70's, block font in front of a fire background.  Yeah, go ahead and say it.  I am a graphics geek.   So it was more or less opportunistic cooicidence, rather than desire that caused me to walk down to the Snout Saloon on Saturday night.  The Wife was in a bath, wanting to stay home on a chance that her friend PJ, would stop by later.  The kids were all in bed.  And, what the heck it is only a few blocks away.  So, I announced my departure and made the walk.

Like I said, not expecting much.  I walked in the door shortly before the solo of a ZZ Top song.  A great solo it was.  Of course my timing held, the band went on break after the next song.  But when they came on after the break I have to say the band was quite solid.  Lead singer Job Jones could belt out some strong vocals.  Andy Cox on lead guitar had excellent timing and great finger speed.  I was really happy with the second set the band played.  It was a really good variety of bar room staples. And there was a really great original piece just before the second set break.  I suggest you put Qwikfire on your recommended watching list.

What I found interesting about the crowd at the Snout Saloon was I only knew one person.  There has been a total change-over at the bar.  The blues fans are all gone.  And gone where, I don't know.  I suppose they are smoking cigarettes in their living rooms or something.  The Snout had a nitch blues market, and now they are staging music just the same as everyone else.  I suppose the blues couldn't support them, but I do wonder if they can support staging bands that play all over town.

Patrick's Beard and the Rusty RazorsDuring a Qwikfire break I slipped down to Every Buddy's Bar & Grill where I caught a few songs by Patrick's Beard and the Rusty Razors.  They are a quasi new age bluegrass band from the Des Moines area.  Interesting music, not totally my thing.  Too much new wavie discord.  The crowd seemed to like them though, so it must have been a me thing.
