Music Business

"The Music Business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs.  There's also a negative side."

We Miss The CARP 99.9
Sun shiny days make me think of summer.  Thinking of summer makes me think of how much we are going to miss our radio station.

Chippewa Valley Concert Band at Delong Middle School

Chippewa Concert Band at Delong Middle School. April 2010

It wasn't my typical fare. But, like whiskey and religion, a little bit of concert band music isn't a bad thing. I readily confess to being a concert band neophyte. I went through a classical phase of my life a few years back. Even then, it never really extended into anything more than the occasional Copeland, the even less common Sousa. I know some directors/bands really shirk these staples and I for one, was happy to see Sousa on the program.

Cats Ass at TnC Roundabout

Cats Ass on stage at TnC April 2010

The TnC Roundabout was fairly busy.  Every seat was taken, and the prime standing room filled.  The band was Cats Ass, an 80's cover band.  They put on a good show.  The crowd loved them.  They were loud and had a good light show.  Really, all the ingredients for a good time.

Evergreen Grass Band at Sheeley House

Evergreen Grass Band on stage at Sheeley House April 2010

I don't often darken the doorways of the Sheeley House, here in Chippewa Falls.  But, my friend Bill needed to get out.  He is a huge bluegrass fan and he has been working too hard at one of life's more thankless jobs.  He has been playing too little, with his nose to the grindstone.  He has been stressed out and thinking about quitting his job.    I figured a night out would be perfect for him.  We talked early in the day and made some guy plans.  …Those are the ones made to include our wives, but not actually consulting with each wife before making them.

Avenbury at Acoustic Cafe

Avenbury on stage at the Acoustic Cafe March 2010

I first heard of the band Avenbury about a month ago.  They were playing, perhaps at the Acoustic, but I think it was someplace more like the Bottle & Barrel.  I had thought about going.  The Wife had her posse over to hang out in front of the fireplace that night.  I was really thinking I might be able to slip out for a few hours.  But then the mini-van got blocked in by the posse.   That gave my lazy-ass side the juicy rationalization it needed to sit at home and do nothing.  So I missed them and felt kind of bad about it.  I have looked forward to this night ever since.

Autocrat, Mood Beside, and Aquamarine Dream Machine at the Snout

Aquamarine Dream Machine on stage at the Snout Saloon, March 2010

I have somewhat held off on writing this week. Saturday night I was at the Snout Saloon for a three band night. Three bands from Des Moines, Iowa made the six hour drive up here to play at the Snout Saloon. It was interesting. It was good, it wasn't fantastic. All three bands had their strong points, but they had some weak points too. The Snout was filled and busy from open to close. It was a great crowd. A much younger crowd than the Snout usually sees.

Super Deece at the Snout Saloon

Super Deece at the Snout Saloon March 2010

This is going to be a rare article.  I don't think that I can come up with a single thing to complain about in this whole night of music.  I know all of you who follow me are amazed.  The music was outstanding!  The show ran about half an hour long, so there was even more to enjoy.  The crowd was great.  The bar was packed all night.  We had a good friend hanging out with us, it was just a really great time.

Quadrant 4 at the Red Parrot and Regulars at the Mousetrap

Quadrant 4 on stage at the Red Parrot March 2010

There are rare times where fate aligns itself.  I had a personal invite from the band to catch their performance, but our child care options had fallen through. I was granted permission from The Wife for a Freak and Geek solo flight. Woo hoo! It was my first visit to the Red Parrot, the former Woo's Bodega …er, ah, I mean Pagota. What a great bar for music! Good sized, big stage, pretty good sound. They need more lights, the right side of the stage was dark, hiding the bass player and rhythm guitarist in shadow. Perhaps if they continue to host music, they can put a little investment into some additional lights.

Irie Sol and Duncan Ninja backstage at the State

Irie Sol on stage at the State Theater March 2010

Thursday night brought a Freak and Geek quorum to Eau Claire for Volume One's, Backstage Concert Series of music.  Held entirely on the stage of the State Theater, its a great concept for a venue.  Rather than walking in the front door, across plush carpets, past stone and oak, and into padded seats;  you instead go around the corner, down the ally and enter through the stage door.   The lighting back stage, spotlights raking up the interior brick walls, intensifies the roughness, the ally like feel.  It is the polar opposite of the effect the front door instills.  But, what it does do, is makes you part of the club.  Part of the family of players who have the rights to enter via the stage door.
