On Feburary 7th, the day after the Decadent Cabaret, I was looking for the web site of the band, No Loving Place. I wanted to determine their next show because I wanted to be there. Back then, the middle of May was a long ways away. The Decadent Cabaret show only gave me a very small taste of something I wanted more of. I had to wait until last night to fulfill that taste. And, even then, I didn't get what I expected. Because, it wasn't No Loving Place. And, it wasn't loud, roaring, pounding screaming that took the stage. It was Sons of Banner.

It's been a while since I have seen Anna Johnson. Each time I do, I am happier. She is developing more stage presence, her music is more confident. Tonight, Chippewa Falls High School played host to Anna Johnson. Once local, she and her band are now living in Nashville. They came here, to Anna's home, for her CD release party. It was a great party. The music was good. I thought Anna was looking great. She seemed relaxed and happy, though she told us she was quite nervous, you couldn't see it on her.
(Sorry about picture quality. The family camera was at another event. I handed out a couple of stickynotes with my name and email, asking for some pictures but so far haven't gotten anything.)

I had a nephew in town tonight and so it was a good excuse to get out. A little dinner at the Galloway Grill and then a short hop over to the Haymarket for some beers and music. The band was GFY. Sort of a subset of the Eau Claire Blues All Stars …which you don't hear much about lately. Perhaps they are not playing anymore? The Haymarket Grill was fairly quiet but the band did well playing to the small crowd. It was a good night for some blues.

There are bands for which I have a hard time coming up with enough new and different superlatives. Lets see, amazing, yes, check. Outstanding, got that one too. Fantastic, yes I have used that one as well. Sometimes I feel there is little more for me to say. Left Wing Bourbon is definitely one of those bands. They are a funky blues band revolving around the powerhouse vocals of Faith Ulwelling. In my opinion, vocally they are the best band in the Chippewa Valley, and instrumentally, they are not too far behind.

Here it is, over two weeks since the show. The Wife has been asking me almost daily if I have written this review. I told her "nearly", making me feel totally guilty. I hadn't in fact written a word. My only plea, falling on her deaf ears, is a project I have been working on for just over a year at my real job is about to go live. Very soon my workplace will be running its web site on the same software I have made you'all the guinea pigs of for the past three years. It has been an adventure. I am glad it is almost over.

About three years ago I caught Jess McChesney's solo act. Though I found it technically interesting in just how he does his thing, I was rather luke-warm on the music itself. It was ok. I suppose I thought much the same of Jess's music as many of the elitist singer/songwriter musicians think of cover bands, talentless. Dependent on the electronic toys, and lifeless. Fast forward three years. Things have changed. Jess hasn't just been resting, he has been getting better. Way better, and I don't think I will pass up an opportunity to see him again. It was a great show!

Friday night it was the band, The Pheremones, playing at My Place. --The bar Volume One Magazine calls Chippewa Valley's Toughest Bar. It has been a rough couple of weeks, and a particularly rough day. I was ready for a good time, and The Pheremones delivered in style! They were a great cover band, playing just exactly the type of music I wanted to hear. By the end of the night, between the music, observing the ruffians, and the cheap beer prices I was fully cured. Thank you Pheromones!

As the day wore on today, I thought the band Squeeze This had planned this weather. Most of the day it was dark and cloudy. Gloomy, cold, depressing. Filled with despair. And then in the hours before showtime, the sun broke out and before long the sky was cloudless. Really the same pattern as their show.
