Music Business

"The Music Business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs.  There's also a negative side."

We Miss The CARP 99.9
Sun shiny days make me think of summer.  Thinking of summer makes me think of how much we are going to miss our radio station.

Irie Sol at The Snout Saloon
irieSol_Snout_Nov092It was a wild party at the Snout Saloon.  It was a struggle to get from the front door to the dance floor.  The house was packed and lively.  And, for a good reason.  The band Irie Sol is the pinnacle of a party band to come to the Snout.  Their music is an interesting mix of traditional reggae and poppy hip-hop, rappin' to a reggae beat, and I loved it!

Leiah Webb at Haymarket Grill
Leiah Webb plays at the Haymarket Grill, Eau Claire WII have been waiting for this opportunity for a long time.  It was March of this year when I saw Leiah Webb for the first time.  She was warming up for Brian Bethke at the Hallie Bar.  Ever since that time I tried to align my schedule with Leiah's solo dates but it never quite worked out.  Most of the time she was busy playing mandolin in the Evergreen Grass Band, not really playing solo very often.  I felt like her talent would get buried in a band the size of Evergreen.   Her solo gig was worth the wait.

Derek Luttrell at Dunn Bros, Oakdale MN

This is something new for me.  Generally I like to fly well under the radar.  Sort of slide in the back door of places where the band is already playing.  Blend in with the crowd.  Ideally, I feel I am never noticed.  But tonight it is a different story.  A small outlet for chainstore coffee, where there are less than a dozen people here.  It is tough to blend.  It is an interested experience though being able to write while the music plays.  And the music plays well.  Derek Luttrell should be on your must see list.

Little Willie at The Snout

It was a long day for us.  We had company come and visit for the day, we cooked meals and had a great time.  I was fairly tired by the time I got to the Snout Saloon for tonight's music.  But, I had been looking forward to seeing a new band.  Where the Snout lineup so far has been the list of old favorites, this was someone I had never seen before.  The band Little Willie was enthusiastic and did a good job.  Technically I thought their performance was there.  I would call their music jazz influence blues.   Little Willie is a fairly high energy act and deserves you give it a listen.

Howard Luedtke at The Snout

It was small crowd of loyal fans who were at the Snout on Friday night.  It was the first night of a weekend set of Chippewa Valley's Blue's icon Howard Luedtke, and his band Blue Max.  The band had a little bit different sound than usual.  Howard is changing up his equipment a little bit to compensate for some health issues.  The sound was good though.  And it was a fun show.

Ross William Perry @ the Snout

The crowd on Friday night was wild for the Jimmy Hendrix Experience. Shouting out chants of "Hendrix, Hendrix, Hendrix".  And, there are few guitar players more capable to rise to that challenge than Ross William Perry.  With a stunning rendition of Little Wing, it was Hendrix in the style, Stevie Ray Vaughan. I find myself humming it to myself still, and it is Saturday afternoon.   During the third set, there was a rendition of All Along the Watchtower that had the boisterous crowd, spellbound.  It was really a good night to be at the Snout Saloon.

Anna Johnson and Derek Luttrell at Acoustic Cafe

annaJohnsonAcousticCafe09-2

Tonight at the Acoustic Cafe, Derek Luttrell opened for, once local favorite, now Nashville girl back for a visit, Anna Johnson.   It was a great  show to a full and enthusiastic  house.   I speak for all of us in the audience who are happy to have Anna back with us for a couple of weeks, from her new home in Nashville.

Taiko Drums at the Heyde Center

taikoDrumsHeydeCenter1

Every since the movie Rising Sun I have wanted to see the Taiko drums.  Or, should I say I have idealized seeing them.  But, it was one of those things I never quite seemed to get around to doing.  This week when Volume One came out, I saw the listing for Taiko drums coming to the Heyde Center, I considered it.  But it was one of those considerations in the way of, "I would like to go, but I know something else will come up" sort of things.  Then suppertime came, and the Wife said unto me, "I would like to go but I can't, so I think you should go."  And, shortly thereafter, I found myself walking up the east hill toward the Heyde Center.  It wasn't until then, as I was less than a block away that I really took stock of my actions.  I thought about the fact, for the past thirty years I have been going to shows.  And for thirty years when the drum solo starts, I am the guy diving for the bathroom doors, or going up to the bar to order more drinks.  I *hate* drum solos!  What am I doing here?
