Eau Claire's House of Rock played host to Megafaun, the once local band, now based out of Durham, North Carolina and going big time. It is just weeks after Rolling Stone Magazine gave them four stars for their latest CD, _Gather, Form & Fly_. The show was advertised to be an early show. They weren't kidding. After a little mixup in babysitting I arrived at the House of Rock shortly after ten pm, only in time to catch the final two songs. Still it was worth the trip. Megafaun shows start slow and build to crescendo.

There were positive attributes about the Marilyn Manson concert I was at earlier this evening. A few months ago the concert was announced to be at the Myth Nightclub. I bought the tickets with some trepidation. We had only heard bad things about the Myth. The pinnacle of which, was my nephew who had Rob Zombie tickets, and left before the main act hit the stage. He hated the place that much. So, when the Myth filed bankruptcy last month, and I heard the show was being moved to the State Theater, I was very happy. I am betting the moshpit crowd wasn't. Certainly, with assigned seats the wild fans, could not be so wild. The concert also had a downside. A very unfortunate one. The music.

The 2009-2010 Snout Saloon Music season is about to begin! As much as I don't like this, beccause it forebodes the arrival of winter. Parking of the motorcycle which has taken up my spare time and kept me from writing in this blog. Sill, I am excited to hear good local blues. Live from the edge of a pooltable in a dark smokey bar. My trusty compendium of music, the whos-who of the Chippewa Valley, sitting at my side.
The first night of music is October 10th with Blues Band, Mojo Lemon kicking it off. So far, with the regulars inked in, other than a new blues band, Little Willie, it looks like a familiar lineup. I am hoping for some new names as the schedule fills in. Watch the schedule in the left column of this web site for event dates and artists. In the meantime I leave you with a quote:
"Rock journalism is people who can't write interviewing people who can't talk for people who can't read."

Tuesday night was installment number five in the Chippewa Valley Blues Society's Tuesday Night Blues at Owen Park in Eau Claire. The band was The Pumps who bill themselves as a blues influenced rock and roll band. I would guess that about covers it. They put on a respectable show. For this show, however, they had a special guest. And for me, that special guest made my night.

Installment number four in the Tuesday night Blues on the River series, the Blues Dogs, had its ups and downs. The Tuesday night concert was nearly rained out, as it sprinkled the whole set, and rained during the final songs. It is ironic that my time, the time to write about it, is all made possible due to rainfall in the Chippewa Valley. I don't write nearly as much as I ride in the summer and riding a Harley in the rain, is not as much fun as writing about a band.

You always hear about bands that are described as "tight" but yet I have never really used the expression myself, before now. I think it best describes the band Laarks. Their music is just so perfectly timed. The electronic effects fit in so well, the vocals, fantastic. I have also never referred to a drummer as amazing. So in one night of music, in the Volume One, Sounds Like Summer concert series, we are breaking lots of ground. The band the Laarks, well, they are tight!

Thursday threatened rain the entire day and left me continually checking the forecast and scanning the skies. My mood swung pendulum style, with every dark cloud on the horizon, to the brief periods of clear and beautiful. Even on the way to Eau Claire for the event, I couldn't say for sure if I was going to get wet ...and even wetter on the motorcycle ride back home. But, even so, it wasn't my personal dampness I was concerned about. I didn't want the event to be cancelled. For the past several weeks, since I have heard of it's inception, I have been looking forward to seeing the new band, South Farwell. I have to say I wasn't disappointed. Surprised, maybe.

I don't usually speak poorly of any musician in these pages. I really appreciate that they are up there and playing. But, I feel like I need to make a little bit of a special exception in this case. Because Friday night at the Kingston Mines, 2548 North Halsted in Chicago, was a night of balance. On one side good, on the other, not so good. I am going to caveat it, people have off nights, not everyone likes the same thing etc. But, I also feel like I always try to write with the movie, Almost Famous, credo of "honest, and unmerciful. " I really feel like the Kingston stage deserved better.
