Anna Johnson recorded her new CD in front of a live audience Saturday night. I was lucky enough to score an invitation to the live recording session of, Anna Johnson Live from The Living Room at the Living Room Coffeehouse in Eau Claire. It was a wonderful experience and I have to thank Anna for inviting me, even after my lackluster previous review. I was able to see her in a new light, and I thank her also for that opportunity.

When we walked into the Hallie Bar, the music had started. The happy hour shift was just over the legal driving limit, and about to head out onto the roads. So, shortly after we got there, we were able to score a seat right at the end of the bar. Immediately I noticed Brian's setup was not his usual. Normally a light traveler, he was this time setup with two mikes and three guitars.

We have been meaning to see the band Half Life for the past three years. It took them performing within two miles of our house to actually get us out to do it. Half Life is a cover band specializing in 70's, 80's and even a few 90's hits. And, they are a good cover band, with a few caveats.

Hanging out, and becoming a regular, at a bar adopts you into a family. And, just as families have dysfunctional, odd ball members, the strange uncle, the odd aunt, it is not surprising bar families have even more. And, then there is the continuum of bars. Where you have your clean, loosened-tie-patron, bars on one end of the spectrum, and then near the other end of the spectrum close to where The Snout is. It is bars like this, where you have what our friend Jane terms as the Derelicts. The flotsom and jetsam debris of Chippewa Valley, which have caught up on a bar stool for a few hours.

It was a microscopic slice of Bourbon Street last night on Canal Street as the Abbott's and Sattler's celebrated Mardi Gras in the packed Dewey's Roadhouse. It was a great party! Being a warmer night, the crowds were bigger than last year. At one point, Dewey's was turning people away, it was so packed! The DJ music was hot and the dance floor was shoulder to shoulder. So tell me girls, what did you have to do to get all those beads? |

The residents of Chippewa Falls Ward 1 have a unique opportunity this year. It is this year, the year of hope, they have the chance to vote, not for your wimpy, plasticized paper. Not for your pansy-assed, laminated cardboard. Or, not even for your corrugated plastic with matching H constructed wire frame. No. The first ward has the opportunity to vote for the genuine article, real wood. And, when we are talking wood, we aren't just talking chipboard and twisty pine. No, nothing like that. We are talking half an inch of GS2 plywood, sealed and sanded smooth. We are talking square corners, strength, and for black Helvetica on a white background. Ward one has this opportunity, and, I for one, hope the first ward seizes it.

As cold day, drags into cold day, and we flip the calendar with no apparent effect, moods sink and we feel winter will never end. I become anti-social and it is tough to keep spirits up. I have never lived anywhere south of 43.66°N. I have always lived where the seasons change and I have always enjoyed those changes. I have even reveled in the fact that I am "tough enough" to take it. But this year, has been rough. Or, I am getting weaker, I am not sure which. It would be much more difficult to move here in the depth of winter and try to acclimate.

The dance floor at the Snout Saloon was filled almost all night, with people boogieing to the rock/blues sounds of Ross William Perry. It was a full dance floor and a full bar. The cash registers were ringing with drink sales. A good night for the Snout. It was a big night there. In addition to the music, there was a going away party for Snout regular, Staff Sergeant Mike Hanke, who is going back to Iraq for his third deployment there. Mike is a great guy and we all wish him a safe return a year from now.
